Cars Won’t Have Steering Wheels For Too Much Longer

When I think of a vehicle there are several things that come to mind right away, no matter who the manufacturer is. I think of seat belts, mirrors, steering wheels, headlights, turn signals, and the list could go on and on. In the coming decades, though, many of those mentioned items may not have a place in the vehicles of the future. We all know that self-driving cars are in our future, but just how much will those vehicles change the vehicles we’ve grown so used to over the years?

Well, according to a study done by the Institute of Electronics and Engineers, pretty much everything we know and love is going to change. Here are the big couple of changes, though – they say that in 20 years, cars won’t include rear view mirrors or…steering wheels. No steering wheels? How are we going to turn the car? Quite simply, we won’t be turning the car or doing anything else to the car while it’s in motion, because the car will be doing everything for itself. We will quite literally just be along for the ride.

Meet The Car Of The Future!

I can’t even begin to imagine a world where drivers have next to no control over what’s happening on the road. I’ve asked this before, but what happens to the self-driving car when it somehow malfunctions? Will they all include some kind of failsafe device which the human driver can access? Because if not, I can’t imagine that ending very well.

While I am excited at the future of autonomous cars, there are obviously a lot of kinks which will need to be worked out in the meantime. What do you think? Can you picture cars without the features we’ve all grown so used to?
