Microsoft Slashes 18,000 Jobs

Microsoft is making big news as of late, and it has nothing to do with Windows or any other Microsoft program. Rather, it turns out that the software giant is making headlines currently for some big and unfortunate job cuts. Just how many people are being laid off? Sadly, the total number will turn out to be approximately 18,000 positions.

In April of this year, Microsoft acquired part of Nokia and gained around 28,000 of their original employees. Now, with these job cuts, 12,500 of them will soon be laid off. The job cuts come as a result of Microsoft distancing themselves from Nokia phones to focus more on Windows phones, Windows OS, and their new “X” phones which are forthcoming.

While Microsoft has been around for a long time and has undoubtedly had to do some job cuts before, this is by far the largest force reduction in the company’s history. Obviously, it remains to be seen how these job cuts will ultimately affect Microsoft in the long run. They seem to be banking a lot on their up and coming “X” phone and Windows phones.

What do you think? Are you eagerly anticipating their new “X” phone which will supposedly compete with Android phones? Do you like the Windows mobile operating system? Do you think they’ll ever overtake iPhones and/or Android phones? Let us know your thoughts regarding this story in the comments section below.

NASA Physicist Unveils Warp Speed Spacecraft Design

I am a bit of a nerd when it comes to Sci-Fi.  I love movies such as The Empire Strikes Back and Stargate, and as a kid I really enjoyed escaping reality by watching TV series like Star Trek.  To me, the idea of traveling to distant stars or planets via wormholes or using a spacecraft, still gives me a sense of wonder.  Maybe someday we will accomplish these feats and it won’t just be in the minds of people like George Lucas and Gene Roddenberry.

Could this be the concept design for our future FTL spacecraft?
If it is going to happen, then I suppose mankind’s best efforts would come out of NASA.  Faster than light (FTL) travel, may not be so far off in the future after all.  NASA’s Harold White has been working over the last four years to develop a warp drive, which will allow a spacecraft to travel at speeds faster than light.  White’s team has been working on a warp drive that would transcend space and shorten the distance between two points.  This would allow the craft to break the speed of light and would be a spaceship with no speed limit whatsoever.

White currently heads up NASA’s Advanced Propulsion Team.  He spoke about the concept of an FTL starship at a conference last year. His project has reached a new level of interest this week however, when he unveiled images of what the craft may look like.  The images were created by artist Mark Rademaker, who has based them upon White’s designs. They show a technologically detailed spacecraft, which took more than 1,600 hours to complete.

Matthew Jeffries’ 1965 sketch of the Enterprise from Star Trek

Last November in Phoenix, US at the SpaceVision 2013 Space Conference, White discussed his design, the concepts, and the progress that’s been made in warp-drive development. The idea of a “space warp,” is a loophole in the theory of general relativity, which would allow for colossal distances to be travelled quickly, thereby reducing the travel time from thousands of years to just days.

During his speech, White described space warps as distant galaxies, which can bend light around them. The idea works on a principle of bending space in front of and behind a spacecraft. This would theoretically allow for the empty space behind the spacecraft to expand.  The result would both push and pull it forward simultaneously.

White said at the conference, “There’s no speed limit on the expansion and contraction of space…You can actually find a way to get around what I like to call the 11th commandment: Thou shall not exceed the speed of light.”

Obviously the technology to create an FTL spacecraft or the warp drive itself, dose not exist as yet. But the artistic renderings Rademaker created may potentially be a model for the future.  White says he drew from Matthew Jeffries’ 1965 sketches of the starship ‘Enterprise’ from “Star Trek,” in his design, as he says parts of that ship were mathematically accurate.  He worked alongside Rademaker and graphic designer Mike Okuda to update the mathematics and produce what he believes to be a viable spacecraft.

GoTenna Gives You A Cell Signal Anywhere

I’m sure you’ve been there at some point in time in your life – you really need to use your cell phone and no matter how high you hold your phone, you just can’t seem to get any kind of a signal. While that’s inconvenient, it can also be extremely dangerous, especially when you really need to get a hold of someone. And while there are more cell towers now than ever before, there are still places where it’s next to impossible to get a signal. While I may not be able to help you get a cell tower built near where you live or work, I can help point you toward a new gadget that promises to give you a bit of a signal wherever you may find yourself.

It’s called the GoTenna, and it’s pretty much exactly what it sounds like – an antenna for wherever you go. It’s a small wand weighing only about 2 ounces that can attach to a backpack or a belt. Using Bluetooth low energy, it connects to an app and lets a user send texts and/or GPS coordinates to another user.

The GoTenna has a pretty strong battery, too. If you never turn it on a charge will last for up to a year and a half, and it’ll last for up to 3 days with use. And while the GoTenna isn’t for folks who need a constant data connection for their phones, it seems ideal for people who like to get away from everyone else, but who ultimately don’t want to totally lose their connection to the outside world in the case of an emergency.

GoTenna is currently accepting preorders for their device, and if you act now you can get 2 for $149.

What do you think? Would you use it? Let us know in the comments section below!

Chip Can Detect Diabetes

Scientists at Stanford University have said they have developed a fresh test for type 1 diabetes, which will cost only a fraction of the current price.  The really cool thing about this new test is that it could speed up the diagnosis of the disease from days to hours.  This method could be useful anywhere on the planet, but especially so in poorer countries where many people with diabetes go undiagnosed because the existing tests are too expensive to be offered widely.

The current testing method involves blood samples that are sent to a lab, where radioactive materials are used to detect the cause of the disease.  This is a so-called auto-antibody, which attacks the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. This is a labour-intensive test and currently costs hundreds of dollars.

Instead of sending a patient’s blood to a laboratory to be tested, the newly developed test, works by the sample is placed on a $20 chip roughly the size of a business card along with a chemical, which produces a fluorescent signal when it encounters auto-antibodies. A glass plate on the chip is coated with nanoscale islands of gold that enhance the fluorescent signal – This helps to ensure the test is reliable.  The test can differentiate between type 1 diabetes, which causes the body to produce practically no insulin, and type 2, in which the body does not produce enough insulin.

Joyce Lee*, associate professor of paediatrics and communicable diseases at the University of Michigan said, “In terms of cost, convenience, and speed, it’s likely to be a better solution.”
Brian Feldman, the assistant professor of paediatric endocrinology at Stanford University, who led the team of researchers, is the senior author of the paper that was published this week in Nature Medicine.  The team has filed for a patent on the chip and is in the process of seeking approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and are launching a startup company for the chip.

These Car Seats Hope To Prevent Sleeping at The Wheel

Let’s just admit it – most of us, at one time or another, have ventured closer than we’d like to admit to falling fully asleep while driving behind the wheel. When I used to work the night shift, it became almost a daily battle to keep my eyes open long enough to drive home; I was constantly nodding off and jerking my head back up, adrenaline kicking in long enough to keep me alert for another couple of minutes before my head would start nodding off again. There were even a couple of times when I began to veer off of the road only to be snapped awake by the rumble strips on the side of the highway. Today I’m so thankful I never crashed the car due to sleeping and driving. Others haven’t been so lucky.

Oh, there’s lots of ideas out there to prevent falling asleep behind the wheel – blasting the music, freezing yourself out with the air conditioning, rolling down the windows, slapping yourself (that one doesn’t really work), and the list could go on and on. If the body is tired though, there’s not a lot you can do to keep it from shutting down. Not for long anyway. But there’s some new car seats being developed that might just help drowsy drivers get home (or wherever else they’re going) safely without risking their lives or anyone else’s in the process. Some researchers from Nottingham Trent University have been hard at work designing a special type of car seat that detects a driver’s electrocardiogram – in other words, it can read your heart rate, etc. to see when a person is falling asleep while driving.

Wake Up!
To be honest, the car seats they’re working on are not ready to hit the market, nor will they be likely to within the next few years – but they do have incredible potential. The idea behind them is simple – when the seat detects a driver falling asleep, it will turn on all of the vehicle’s autonomous features, such as cruise control and automatic lane-keeping, and let the driver sleep peacefully.

While I appreciate this technology, it’s also a little scary at the same time. What if something goes wrong? Can we really depend on an autonomous car?

What do you think? Would you place your life in the hands of a car? Let us know your thoughts regarding this story in the comments section below.
